We all know how hard it is when you are starting out to build your kit and to use products that can guarantee great results, that are not going to break the bank. I often find when I work with clients they ask whats the best budget makeup they can buy! Often you get what you pay for but here are a few tricks that you can suggest recomended from my own experience and whats actually in my kit!
For most of the artists its Maybeline Blackest Black in our kits but I still strongly believe in HYPNOSE by LANCOME. After all the tried and tested mascaras that we go through as artists I still go back to Hypnose. Price points at £18.50 for the Hypnose.
A highly recomended budget option is the MAX FACTOR masterpiece, similar brush to the hypnose, this gives you a fair amout of play time before it sets and at £9.99 its not too bad a pretty penny!
RCMA! RCMA! I cannot tell you how much I love this product! Ive used this product from day 1! Recomended by my own Makeup school Blanche Macdonald this brand is tried and trusted through applying prosthetics and setting makeups on all skin types. At an average selling point of £7.50 this loose powder will be in your kit for years.
Makeup For Ever HD powder. Gaurenteed to make your skin feel like velvet, this powder is so light and finely ground to work with light to mid range skin tones. On a side note, less is more with this product, use too much and you’ll find it shows up on in the camera! Retails at £12.50
Makeup For Ever Aqua Black is the darkest most consistent eyeliner out there and it is waterproof so perfect for underwater shoots and brides. Dries out quick though so you need to be fast with the application. Retails at £17.50.
A gel based eyeliner on a budget is one by Rimmel, easy and smooth application its the best in the drug store but does not have the intensity of the Aqua Black, which can be easily fixed by setting black eyeshadow over it. Cost effective at £6.49
Face Atelier has a great Pro range with 12 colours and a white to mix into the foundations. Pricey but this foundation is definatly worth it with it dewy texture and buildable quality. Sides on the yellow so not for the mature or the blue black skin tones. Pricey per bottle at $48 but buy the pro kit and you get every colour for £499 which breaking it down 16 foundations.. not bad!!
Revlon Colour Stay- I used this foundation for years before I could afford the FACE ATELIER pro set. Fantastic foundations with mixtures of pink and yellow tones with a good range from light to dark. One supprising element of this great budget foundation is that you can also use it through an airbrush. You may find this foundation sneaking in alot of film/tv makeup artists kits kept in clear bottles as the class can be heavy in weight but light on the retail price of £8.50 a bottle!
Theres no dicussion Guerlain do the most beautiful bronzers on the market, the tone and the balence of shine work perfectly with prices ranges from £30-35 per compact. But they did come out with the origional bronzer so they have had a long time to get it right. When you work in in print or tv work alot of time you will work with them. and a MATT bronzer is required for contour or warming of a skin tone. Things to watch out when buying your bronzers is to make sure they are not too olive or dark or too orange taking the skin from ash to tango. Light in application is key when working with them and building in the sun kissed areas forehead, bridge of the nose, chin and cheekbones of the cheeks. So these are the best budget Rimmel Matt bronzer of £5.99 a steal on the market. One other bronzer that I do feel needs crediting is Hula by Benefit, great tone suits all skin types, its the orgasm of bronzers.
*******On a side note once you get your work published in printed and online magazines get in touch with the PR contacts of the cosmetic companies. Most brands offer product for a mention in magazines ie when credited Makeup Artist MaryAnn Richardson using MAC Cosmetics, some even offer monetry value*********
